1. Full Dutch translation of Tabari's text

   Then He said, exalted is His praise: فَأَنْذَرْتُكُمْ نَارًا تَلَظَّى ("So I have warned you of a Fire that blazes"). He, exalted is His mention, says: So I have warned you, O people, of a Fire that blazes up, and that is the Fire of Hell (jahannam). He says: Beware of disobeying your Lord in this worldly life and of being unbelieving toward Him, lest you enter it in the Hereafter and roast in it. And it was said: تَلَظَّى , while it is in fact تَتَلَظَّى , and it is in the nominative case (rafʿ), because it is a verb in the imperfect tense; and had it been a verb in the perfect tense, one would have said: فَأَنْذَرْتُكُمْ نَارًا تَلَظَّتْ .

   And in agreement with what we have said about this, the scholars of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) have spoken.

   Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us, both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning the saying of Allah: نَارًا تَلَظَّى , he said: It blazes up.

   ثم قال جل ثناؤه: ( فَأَنْذَرْتُكُمْ نَارًا تَلَظَّى ) يقول تعالى ذكره: فأنذرتكم أيها الناس نارا تتوهَّج، وهي نار جهنم، يقول: احذروا أن تعصوا ربكم في الدنيا، وتكفروا به، فَتصْلَونها في الآخرة. وقيل: تلظَّى، وإنما هي تتلظَّى، وهي في موضع رفع، لأنه فعل مستقبل، ولو كان فعلا ماضيا لقيل: فأنذرتكم نارًا تلظَّت. وبنحو الذي قلنا في ذلك قال أهل التأويل. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثني محمد بن عمرو، قال: ثنا أبو عاصم، قال: ثنا عيسى، وحدثني الحارث، قال: ثنا الحسن، قال: ثنا ورقاء، جميعا عن ابن أبي نجيح، عن مجاهد، في قول الله: ( نَارًا تَلَظَّى ) قال: تَوَهَّج.
