And His statement: وَنَفْسٍ وَمَا سَوَّاهَا ("and by a soul and by Him who fashioned it"). The Exalted — praised be His mention — means by His word وَمَا سَوَّاهَا ("and by Him who fashioned it") Himself, for it is He who fashioned the soul and created it, and brought its creation into balance. Here He placed "mā" ("what/that which") in the position of "man" ("who/He who"). And it is also possible that the meaning of this is the verbal noun (maṣdar), so that its interpretation would be: "and by a soul and its fashioning" — in which case the oath is then sworn by the soul and by its fashioning.
