His statement: إِنَّهُ ظَنَّ أَنْ لَنْ يَحُورَ * بَلَى ("Indeed, he thought that he would never return. Yes indeed!"). The Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says: indeed this one, who on the Day of Resurrection is given his book behind his back, thought in the worldly life that he would never return to Us and that he would not be resurrected after his death, so that he did not concern himself with whatever sins he committed; for he hoped for no reward and feared no punishment. One says of this: "ḥāra fulān ʿan hādhā al-amr" (so-and-so turned back from this matter), when he returns from it. And of this too is the report that has been transmitted on the authority of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, that in his supplication he used to say: "O Allah, indeed I seek refuge with You from al-ḥawr baʿda al-kawr (the relapse after steadfastness)" — by this he means: against returning to disbelief (kufr) after faith (īmān).

And in accordance with what we have said about this, the people of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) have spoken.
