His statement: وَيَصْلَى سَعِيرًا ("and will burn in a Blazing Fire"). The Qurʾān reciters differ over its reading. Most of the reciters of Mecca, Medina, and Syria read it as ( وَيُصَلَّى ), with a ḍamma on the yāʾ and a doubling (tashdīd) of the lām, in the sense that Allah makes them burn over and over again, one roasting after another and one broiling after another, as the Exalted has said: كُلَّمَا نَضِجَتْ جُلُودُهُمْ بَدَّلْنَاهُمْ جُلُودًا غَيْرَهَا ("Every time their skins are roasted through, We replace them with other skins"). In support of the correctness of this reading they adduced His words: ثُمَّ الْجَحِيمَ صَلُّوهُ ("Then make him burn in the Hellfire").

And some of the people of Medina and most of the reciters of Kūfa and Baṣra read it as ( وَيَصْلَى ), with a fatḥa on the yāʾ and a lightening (takhfīf) of the lām, in the sense that they burn in it and come to it, and are scorched therein. In support of the correctness of this reading they adduced the words of Allah: يَصْلَوْنَهَا ("they will burn in it") and إِلا مَنْ هُوَ صَالِ الْجَحِيمِ ("except he who is to burn in the Hellfire").

And the correct judgment concerning this, in my opinion, is that they are both well-known readings with a sound meaning; whichever of the two the reciter reads, he is correct.
