The statement concerning the explanation of His word — exalted is He —: Does he then not know that Allah sees (14)

He — exalted is His mention — says: does Abū Jahl then not know, when he forbids Muḥammad to worship his Lord and to perform the prayer (ṣalāh) to Him, that Allah sees him, so that he would fear His power and His punishment (ʿadhāb)? And it has been said: "Have you seen the one who forbids a servant when he prays; have you seen whether he is upon right guidance" — thus "have you seen" was repeated three times, by way of substitution (badal). And the meaning is: have you seen the one who forbids a servant when he prays, while he [who forbids] is a denier who turns away from his Lord — does he then not know that Allah sees him.
