الَّذِي أَنْقَضَ ظَهْرَكَ ("which weighed down your back"), he said: which burdened your back heavily.
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His statement: أَلَمْ نَشْرَحْ لَكَ صَدْرَكَ * وَوَضَعْنَا عَنْكَ وِزْرَكَ * الَّذِي أَنْقَضَ ظَهْرَكَ ("Have We not expanded for you your breast? And We removed from you your burden, which weighed down your back"): the Prophet ﷺ had committed sins which burdened him heavily, and Allah forgave them for him.
Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His statement: أَنْقَضَ ظَهْرَكَ , he said: the Prophet had committed sins which burdened him heavily, and Allah forgave them for him.
It was related to me on the authority of al-Ḥusayn, he said: I heard Abū Muʿādh say: ʿUbayd related to us, saying: I heard al-Ḍaḥḥāk say concerning His statement: وَوَضَعْنَا عَنْكَ وِزْرَكَ ("And We removed from you your burden"): he means: the associationism (shirk) in which he had been.
Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His statement: أَلَمْ نَشْرَحْ لَكَ صَدْرَكَ * وَوَضَعْنَا عَنْكَ وِزْرَكَ , he said: He expanded his breast for him, and forgave him his sin which he had before he was made a prophet, and removed it from him.
And concerning His statement: الَّذِي أَنْقَضَ ظَهْرَكَ he said: which burdened him heavily and exhausted him, just as the heavy load makes the camel groan, until it becomes a worn-out beast after having been fat. وَوَضَعْنَا عَنْكَ وِزْرَكَ he said: your sin which made your back groan, which burdened your back heavily, and that We removed from you, and We lightened for you that which had burdened your back heavily.
