Tafseer of The Night · Al-Lail · 92:2
And [by] the day when it appears

* وَالنَّهَارِ إِذَا تَجَلَّى ("And by the day when it reveals itself"). This too is an oath: He swore by the day when it grows bright and clear, and reveals itself to the gaze, at the moment when the darkness of the night no longer stands between it and being seen and actually breaking forth. And Qatāda held, regarding the things by which Allah swore, that He swore by them only on account of their great significance with Him.
As Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His statement: وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَى * وَالنَّهَارِ إِذَا تَجَلَّى ("By the night when it covers, and by the day when it reveals itself"), he said: Two tremendous signs which Allah causes to revolve over the creatures.
