Tafseer of The City · Al-Balad · 90:6
He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance."
Important: The Arabic source text is always authoritative. This translation is a study aid and has not been verified by scholars — do not use it as a basis for religious proof or for deriving rulings (ahkam). When in doubt, always consult the Arabic text and a qualified scholar.
And His word: يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالا لُبَدًا ("He says: I have squandered an enormous fortune"). This strong, obstinate man says: I have squandered much wealth in enmity against Muḥammad ﷺ, and I expended it for that purpose — and he is a liar in this statement of his. It is a form derived from al-talabbud, which means "that which is heaped up": the abundant, one thing upon another. One says of this: labida bi-l-arḍ yalbudu, when something clings to the ground.
And in accordance with what we have said about this, the scholars of exegesis have spoken.
* Mention of who said that:
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, he said: my father related to me, he said: my paternal uncle related to me, he said: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās: مَالا لُبَدًا ("an enormous fortune") — he means by "lubad": much wealth.
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, he said: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, he said: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, he said: al-Ḥasan related to us, he said: Warqāʾ related to us, both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning مَالا لُبَدًا ("an enormous fortune") — he said: much.
Yūnus related to me, he said: Ibn Wahb informed us, he said: Muslim informed me, on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His word: أَهْلَكْتُ مَالا لُبَدًا ("I have squandered an enormous fortune") — he said: much wealth.
Bishr related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word: أَهْلَكْتُ مَالا لُبَدًا ("I have squandered an enormous fortune") — that is to say: much.
Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, he said: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, the like of it.
Yūnus related to me, he said: Ibn Wahb informed us, he said: Ibn Zayd said, concerning His word: مَالا لُبَدًا ("an enormous fortune") — he said: al-lubad: the abundant.
And the reciters differed over the reading of it. The general reciters of the cities read it: مَالا لُبَدًا ("mālan lubadan") with lightening (takhfīf) of the bāʾ. And Abū Jaʿfar read it with doubling (tashdīd) of it.
And the correct view is with the lightening of it, because of the consensus of the authoritative proof upon it.
