Which neither nourishes nor avails against hunger.

And His words: لا يُسْمِنُ وَلا يُغْنِي مِنْ جُوعٍ ("It neither nourishes nor avails against hunger") (88:7) means: This ḍarīʿ (thorny plant) will not nourish, on the Day of Resurrection, the one among the people of the Fire who eats of it, ولا يُغني من جوع ("nor avails against hunger") means: and it will not satisfy them against the hunger that afflicts them.
