His statement: وَمَا نَقَمُوا مِنْهُمْ إِلا أَنْ يُؤْمِنُوا بِاللَّهِ ("And they harbored no resentment against them other than that they believed in Allah"). He, exalted is His mention, says: and these unbelievers (kuffār) who tried the believing men and women with the fire found among the believers nothing [reprehensible], nor did they do to them what they did for any reason, except that they believed in Allah. And He said: ( إلا أن يؤمنوا بالله ) ("other than that they believed in Allah"), because the meaning is: except their belief in Allah; therefore ( يؤمنوا ) ("that they believe") fit in its place, since faith was a characteristic of theirs. ( الْعَزِيزِ ) ("the Almighty") — he says: the Severe in His retribution upon those against whom He carries out retribution. ( الْحَمِيدِ ) ("the Praiseworthy") — he says: the Praised on account of His beneficence toward His creatures.
