[Those of] Pharaoh and Thamud?

He said: فِرْعَوْنَ وَثَمُودَ ("Pharaoh and Thamūd"). He says: "Pharaoh," and contented Himself with mentioning him, since he was the commander of his army, as a mention of his army and his followers. For the meaning of the expression is: Has the account of the hosts come to you — of Pharaoh and his people, and Thamūd? And "Pharaoh" (firʿawn) is in the genitive (khafḍ) as a referring-back to "the hosts" (al-junūd), by way of being a closer specification (tarjama) of them. It was, however, pronounced with a fatḥa because "Thamūd" does not inflect (lā yujrā, that is to say: it is diptotic).
