And His statement: إِنَّ الَّذِينَ فَتَنُوا الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ ("Indeed, those who persecuted the believing men and the believing women"). He says: indeed, those who persecuted the believing men and the believing women on account of Allah, by tormenting them and burning them with fire.
And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the people of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) have spoken.
* Mention of those who said that:
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: my father related to me, saying: my uncle related to me, saying: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās: إِنَّ الَّذِينَ فَتَنُوا الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ ("Indeed, those who persecuted the believing men and the believing women"): they burned the believing men and the believing women.
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both of them — on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His statement: إِنَّ الَّذِينَ فَتَنُوا ("Indeed, those who persecuted"), he said: they tormented.
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His statement: إِنَّ الَّذِينَ فَتَنُوا الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ ("Indeed, those who persecuted the believing men and the believing women"), he said: they burned them with fire.
I was told on the authority of al-Ḥusayn, he said: I heard Abū Muʿādh say: ʿUbayd related to us, saying: I heard al-Ḍaḥḥāk say concerning His statement: فَتَنُوا الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ ("they persecuted the believing men and the believing women"), he says: they burned them.
Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Yaʿqūb related to us, on the authority of Jaʿfar, on the authority of Ibn Abzā: إِنَّ الَّذِينَ فَتَنُوا الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ ("Indeed, those who persecuted the believing men and the believing women"): they burned them.
And His statement: ثُمَّ لَمْ يَتُوبُوا ("then did not repent"). He says: then they did not repent of their unbelief (kufr) and of their deed which they inflicted upon the believing men and the believing women on account of their faith in Allah. فَلَهُمْ عَذَابُ جَهَنَّمَ ("for them is the punishment of Hell (jahannam)") in the Hereafter, وَلَهُمْ عَذَابُ الْحَرِيقِ ("and for them is the punishment of the Burning") in this world.
As I was told on the authority of ʿAmmār, he said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Jaʿfar related to us, on the authority of his father, on the authority of al-Rabīʿ: فَلَهُمْ عَذَابُ جَهَنَّمَ ("for them is the punishment of Hell") in the Hereafter, وَلَهُمْ عَذَابُ الْحَرِيقِ ("and for them is the punishment of the Burning") in this world.
