And His words: هَلْ ثُوِّبَ الْكُفَّارُ مَا كَانُوا يَفْعَلُونَ ("Have the disbelievers been rewarded for what they used to do?") (83:36). The Exalted, whose remembrance is exalted, says: Have the disbelievers (al-kuffār) been recompensed and requited with the requital for what they used to do in the worldly life toward the believers — their mockery of them and their laughing at them — by the believers in the Hereafter laughing at them, while the believers sit reclining upon couches and look on, and they are punished in the Fire (an-nār)?

And ثُوِّبَ ("thuwwiba") is a verb derived from ath-thawāb (reward) and al-jazāʾ (requital). One says of it: "thawwaba fulānun fulānan ʿalā ṣanīʿihi" and "athābahu minhu" (to requite someone for his deed).

And in the spirit of what we have said about this, the people of interpretation (ahl at-taʾwīl) have spoken.

    * Mention of who said that:

Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid: هَلْ ثُوِّبَ الْكُفَّارُ مَا كَانُوا يَفْعَلُونَ ("Have the disbelievers been rewarded for what they used to do?"), he said: requited.

Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān: هَلْ ثُوِّبَ الْكُفَّارُ مَا كَانُوا يَفْعَلُونَ ("Have the disbelievers been rewarded for what they used to do?"), namely when they used to mock.

Here ends the interpretation of Sūrah "Woe to those who give short measure" (al-Muṭaffifīn).
