   The explanation of the saying of the Exalted: عَلَى الأَرَائِكِ يَنْظُرُونَ ("Upon couches they will gaze") (35).

   عَلَى الأرَائِكِ يَنْظُرُونَ ("Upon couches they will gaze") — He says: upon their couches that are within the curtained canopies, they gaze at them, while they are in Paradise (janna) and the unbelievers (kuffār) are punished in the Fire.

   And in accordance with what we have said about this, the exegetes have spoken.

   * A mention of who said that:

   Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: my father related to me, saying: my uncle related to me, saying: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His saying: فَالْيَوْمَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنَ الْكُفَّارِ يَضْحَكُونَ * عَلَى الأرَائِكِ يَنْظُرُونَ ("So today the believers laugh at the unbelievers, upon couches gazing"), he said: by this are meant the raised couches upon which the curtained canopies stand. And Ibn ʿAbbās used to say: indeed, the wall that stands between Paradise and the Fire, in it gates are opened for them, and then the believers look at the people of the Fire, while the believers upon the couches gaze at how they are punished; and then they laugh at them. And that is among the things by which Allah delights their eyes: how Allah takes vengeance upon them.

   Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: فَالْيَوْمَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنَ الْكُفَّارِ يَضْحَكُونَ ("So today the believers laugh at the unbelievers") — it has been related to us that Kaʿb used to say: indeed, between Paradise and the Fire are windows, and when the believer wishes to look at an enemy he had in the worldly life, he looks out through one of those windows. Allah, exalted be His praise, has said: فَاطَّلَعَ فَرَآهُ فِي سَوَاءِ الْجَحِيمِ ("Then he looks down and sees him in the midst of Hellfire"), that is to say: in the middle of the Fire. And it has been related to us that he saw the skulls of the people boiling.

   Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, he said: Kaʿb said: indeed, between the people of Paradise and the people of the Fire are windows; no man of the people of Paradise wishes to look at another of the people of the Fire, but that he does so.

   It was related to me on the authority of al-Ḥusayn, he said: I heard Abū Muʿādh say: ʿUbayd related to us, saying: I heard al-Ḍaḥḥāk say concerning His saying: فَالْيَوْمَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنَ الْكُفَّارِ يَضْحَكُونَ * عَلَى الأرَائِكِ يَنْظُرُونَ ("So today the believers laugh at the unbelievers, upon couches gazing"): Ibn ʿAbbās used to say: the wall stands between the people of Paradise and the Fire, and for the people of Paradise gates are opened, and then they, while upon the couches, look at the people of the Fire how they are punished, and then they laugh at them. And that is among the things by which Allah delights their eyes: how Allah takes vengeance upon them.

   Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān: فَالْيَوْمَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنَ الْكُفَّارِ يَضْحَكُونَ ("So today the believers laugh at the unbelievers"), he said: the unbelievers are brought forward so that they may look at the people of Paradise, in Paradise, upon couches; and at the moment when they look at them, the gates are closed upon them, and the people of Paradise laugh at them. And that is His saying: فَالْيَوْمَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنَ الْكُفَّارِ يَضْحَكُونَ * عَلَى الأرَائِكِ يَنْظُرُونَ ("So today the believers laugh at the unbelievers, upon couches gazing").

   القول في تأويل قوله تعالى : عَلَى الأَرَائِكِ يَنْظُرُونَ (35) ( عَلَى الأرَائِكِ يَنْظُرُونَ ) يقول: على سررهم التي في الحجال ينظرون إليهم وهم في الجنة، والكفار في النار يعذّبون. وبنحو الذي قلنا في ذلك قال أهل التأويل. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثني محمد بن سعد، قال: ثني أبي، قال: ثني عمي، قال: ثني أبي، عن أبيه، عن ابن عباس، قوله: ( فَالْيَوْمَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنَ الْكُفَّارِ يَضْحَكُونَ * عَلَى الأرَائِكِ يَنْظُرُونَ ) قال: يعني: السُّرر المرفوعة عليها الحِجال. وكان ابن عباس يقول: إن السور الذي بين الجنة والنار يُفتح لهم فيه أبواب، فينظر المؤمنون إلى أهل النار، والمؤمنون على السرر ينظرون 24-305كيف يعذّبون، فيضحكون منهم، فيكون ذلك مما أقرّ الله به أعينهم، كيف ينتقم الله منهم. حدثنا بشر، قال: ثنا يزيد، قال: ثنا سعيد، عن قتادة ( فَالْيَوْمَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنَ الْكُفَّارِ يَضْحَكُونَ ) ذُكر لنا أن كعبا كان يقول: إن بين الجنة والنار كوى، فإذا أراد المؤمن أن ينظر إلى عدّو كان له في الدنيا، اطلع من بعض الكوى، قال الله جل ثناؤه: فَاطَّلَعَ فَرَآهُ فِي سَوَاءِ الْجَحِيمِ أي في وسط النار، وذُكر لنا أنه رأى جماجم القوم تغلي. حدثنا ابن عبد الأعلى، قال: ثنا ابن ثور، عن معمر، عن قتادة، قال كعب: إن بين أهل الجنة وبين أهل النار كوى، لا يشاء رجل من أهل الجنة أن ينظر إلى غيره من أهل النار إلا فعل. حُدثت عن الحسين، قال: سمعت أبا معاذ يقول: ثنا عبيد، قال: سمعت الضحاك يقول في قوله: ( فَالْيَوْمَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنَ الْكُفَّارِ يَضْحَكُونَ * عَلَى الأرَائِكِ يَنْظُرُونَ ) كان ابن عباس يقول: السور بين أهل الجنة والنار، فيفتح لأهل الجنة أبواب، فينظرون وهم على السُّرر إلى أهل النار كيف يعذّبون، فيضحكون منهم، ويكون ذلك مما أقرّ الله به أعينهم، كيف ينتقم الله منهم. حدثنا ابن حميد، قال: ثنا مهران، عن سفيان ( فَالْيَوْمَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنَ الْكُفَّارِ يَضْحَكُونَ ) قال: يُجاء بالكفار حتى ينظروا إلى أهل الجنة في الجنة،على سرر، فحين ينظرون إليهم تغلق دونهم الأبواب، ويضحك أهل الجنة منهم، فهو قوله: ( فَالْيَوْمَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنَ الْكُفَّارِ يَضْحَكُونَ * عَلَى الأرَائِكِ يَنْظُرُونَ ) .
