Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mahrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān: ( أَمَّا مَنِ اسْتَغْنَى * فَأَنْتَ لَهُ تَصَدَّى ) ("As for him who deems himself independent, to him you devote yourself")—he said: this was revealed concerning al-ʿAbbās.
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us—both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid—concerning His word: ( أَمَّا مَنِ اسْتَغْنَى ) ("As for him who deems himself independent"), he said: these were ʿUtba ibn Rabīʿa and Shayba ibn Rabīʿa.
