His statement: أَبْصَارُهَا خَاشِعَةٌ ("their eyes downcast") means: the eyes of their possessors are humbled by the dejection and grief that has overcome them, on account of the fear and terror that has descended upon them through the tremendous horror of that Day.

As Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said, concerning His statement: أَبْصَارُهَا خَاشِعَةٌ ("their eyes downcast"); he said: downcast on account of the humiliation that has descended upon them.

Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His statement: أَبْصَارُهَا خَاشِعَةٌ ("their eyes downcast"); he said: that means humbled.
