1. Full Dutch translation of Tabari's text

   The explanation of the saying of the Exalted: يَقُولُونَ أَئِنَّا لَمَرْدُودُونَ فِي الْحَافِرَةِ "They say: Shall we really be restored to our former state?" (79:10)

   He, exalted is His mention, says: These deniers of the resurrection among the polytheists of the Quraysh say, when it is said to them: "You will be raised up after death": Shall we really be restored to our first state from before death, and return alive as we were before our perishing and before our dying? This is derived from their saying: "So-and-so returned upon his ḥāfira" — when someone returns from where he came. To this also belongs the verse of the poet:

   "A return [to youth], despite baldness and grey hair? I seek refuge with Allah from folly and frivolity."

   And in accordance with what we have said about this, the exegetes have spoken.

   * Mention of those who said this:

   ʿAlī related to me, saying: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning his saying الْحَافِرَةِ , he says: Life.

   Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: My father related to me, saying: My uncle related to me, saying: My father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning his saying أَئِنَّا لَمَرْدُودُونَ فِي الْحَافِرَةِ , he says: Shall we really live after our death and be raised up from this place of ours?

   Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, he says: أَئِنَّا لَمَرْدُودُونَ فِي الْحَافِرَةِ : Shall we really be raised up as a new creation?

   Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning فِي الْحَافِرَةِ , he said: That is to say, restored as a new creation.

   Abū Kurayb related to us, saying: Wakīʿ related to us, on the authority of Abū Maʿshar, on the authority of Muḥammad ibn Qays or Muḥammad ibn Kaʿb al-Quraẓī, concerning أَئِنَّا لَمَرْدُودُونَ فِي الْحَافِرَةِ , he said: Into life.

   Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of al-Suddī, concerning أَئِنَّا لَمَرْدُودُونَ فِي الْحَافِرَةِ , he said: Into life.

   And others said: Al-ḥāfira is the dug-up earth in which their graves are excavated; they regarded this then as equivalent to His saying مِنْ مَاءٍ دَافِقٍ "from gushing water" (86:6), by which "poured-out water" is meant. They said: "Al-ḥāfira" has the meaning of "al-maḥfūra" (that which is dug), and the meaning of the saying is, according to them: Shall we really be restored into our graves as dead ones?

   Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us, on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning his saying الْحَافِرَةِ , he said: The earth; we are raised up as a new creation — he said: The resurrection.

   Al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: Al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us, all on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning أَئِنَّا لَمَرْدُودُونَ فِي الْحَافِرَةِ , he said: The earth; we are raised up as a new creation.

   And others said: Al-ḥāfira is the Fire.

   Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: I heard Ibn Zayd say concerning the saying of Allah أَئِنَّا لَمَرْدُودُونَ فِي الْحَافِرَةِ , he said: Al-ḥāfira is the Fire. And he recited the saying of Allah تِلْكَ إِذًا كَرَّةٌ خَاسِرَةٌ "That, then, would be a losing return" (79:12). He said: How numerous are its names! It is al-nār (the Fire), it is al-jaḥīm (the Blaze), it is Saqar, it is jahannam (Hell), it is al-hāwiya (the Abyss), it is al-ḥāfira, it is Laẓā (the blazing flame), and it is al-ḥuṭama (the Crusher).

   القول في تأويل قوله تعالى : يَقُولُونَ أَئِنَّا لَمَرْدُودُونَ فِي الْحَافِرَةِ (10) يقول تعالى ذكره: يقول هؤلاء المكذّبون بالبعث من مشركي قريش إذا قيل لهم: إنكم مبعوثون من بعد الموت: أئنا لمردودون إلى حالنا الأولى قبل الممات، فراجعون أحياء كما كنا قبل هلاكنا، وقبل مماتنا، وهو من قولهم: رجع فلان على حافرته: إذا رجع من حيث جاء؛ ومنه قول الشاعر: أحــافِرَةً عَــلى صَلَــعٍ وشَـيْبٍ مَعــاذَ اللــهِ مِــنْ سَـفَهٍ وطَيْشٍ (13) وبنحو الذي قلنا في ذلك قال أهل التأويل. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثني عليّ، قال: ثنا أبو صالح، قال: ثني معاوية، عن عليّ، عن ابن عباس، قوله: الْحَافِرَةِ يقول: الحياة . حدثني محمد بن سعد، قال: ثني أبي، قال: ثني عمي، قال: ثني أبي، عن أبيه، عن ابن عباس، قوله: أَئِنَّا لَمَرْدُودُونَ فِي الْحَافِرَةِ يقول: أئنا لنحيا بعد موتنا، ونبعث من مكاننا هذا. حدثنا بشر، قال: ثنا يزيد، قال: ثنا سعيد، عن قتادة يقول: أَئِنَّا لَمَرْدُودُونَ فِي الْحَافِرَةِ أئنا لمبعوثون خلقا جديدا. حدثنا ابن عبد الأعلى، قال: ثنا ابن ثور، عن معمر، عن قتادة فِي الْحَافِرَةِ قال: أي مردودون خَلقا جديدا . حدثنا أبو كُرَيب، قال: ثنا وكيع، عن أبي معشر، عن محمد بن قيس أو محمد بن كعب القُرَظيّ أَئِنَّا لَمَرْدُودُونَ فِي الْحَافِرَةِ قال: في الحياة . حدثنا ابن حميد، قال: ثنا مهران، عن سفيان، عن السديّ أَئِنَّا لَمَرْدُودُونَ فِي الْحَافِرَةِ قال: في الحياة . وقال آخرون: الحافرة: الأرض المحفورة التي حُفرت فيها قبورهم، فجعلوا ذلك نظير قوله: مِنْ مَاءٍ دَافِقٍ . يعني مدفوق، وقالوا: الحافرة بمعنى المحفورة، ومعنى الكلام عندهم: أئنا لمردودون في قبورنا أمواتا. حدثني محمد بن عمرو، قال : ثنا أبو عاصم، قال: ثنا عيسى، عن ابن أبي نجيح، عن مجاهد، قوله: الْحَافِرَةِ قال: الأرض: نبعث خلقا جديدا، قال: البعث . حدثني الحارث، قال: ثنا الحسن، قال: ثنا ورقاء، جميعا عن ابن أبي نجيح، عن مجاهد أَئِنَّا لَمَرْدُودُونَ فِي الْحَافِرَةِ قال: الأرض، نبعث خلقا جديدا . وقال آخرون: الحافرة: النار. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثني يونس، قال: أخبرنا ابن وهب، قال: سمعت ابن زيد يقول في قول الله: أَئِنَّا لَمَرْدُودُونَ فِي الْحَافِرَةِ قال: الحافرة: النار، وقرأ قول الله تِلْكَ إِذًا كَرَّةٌ خَاسِرَةٌ قال: ما أكثر أسماءها، هي النار، وهي الجحيم، وهي سَقَرُ، وهي جهنم، وهي الهاوية، وهي الحافرة، وهي لَظَى، وهي الحُطَمة. ------------------ الهوامش : (13) البيت في ( اللسان : حفر ) ولم ينسبه . والرواية فيه وفي تفسير الشوكاني ( 5 : 363 ) " من سفه وعار " قال : في اللسان : يقال : رجع على حافرته أي : الطريق الذي جاء منه . والحافرة الخلقة الأولى ، وفي التنزيل : { أئنا لمردودون في الحافرة } أي : في أول أمرنا . وأنشد ابن الأعرابي : " أحافرة ... " البيت . يقول : أأرجع إلى ما كنت عليه في شبابي وأمري الأول ، من الغزل أو الصبا ، بعد ما شبت وصلعت . وقال أبو عبيدة في مجاز القرآن : { أئنا لمردودون في الحافرة } : من حيث كنا ، يقال : رجع فلان في حافرته : من حيث جاء ، وعلى حافرته : من حيث كان . ا هـ .
