Abū Jaʿfar — may Allah have mercy on him — said: Allah says to His Prophet ﷺ: ( فِيمَ أَنْتَ مِنْ ذِكْرَاهَا ) ("In what capacity are you with regard to the mention of it?"). He says: in what involvement do you stand with regard to mentioning the Hour and investigating its affair? It has been related that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to mention the Hour frequently, until this verse was sent down.
Yaʿqūb ibn Ibrāhīm related to me, saying: Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna related to us, on the authority of al-Zuhrī, on the authority of ʿUrwa, on the authority of ʿĀʾisha, who said: The Prophet ﷺ kept on asking questions about the Hour, until Allah — mighty and exalted is He — sent down: ( فِيمَ أَنْتَ مِنْ ذِكْرَاهَا * إِلَى رَبِّكَ مُنْتَهَاهَا ) ("In what capacity are you with regard to the mention of it? To your Lord is its final end").
Abū Kurayb related to us, saying: Wakīʿ related to us, on the authority of Ismāʿīl, on the authority of Ṭāriq ibn Shihāb, who said: The Prophet ﷺ kept on mentioning the affair of the Hour, until there was sent down: ( يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ السَّاعَةِ أَيَّانَ مُرْسَاهَا ) ("They ask you about the Hour: when will it come to pass?") ... up to ( مَنْ يخْشاهَا ) ("who fears it").
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid — concerning His word: ( فِيمَ أَنْتَ مِنْ ذِكْرَاهَا ) ("In what capacity are you with regard to the mention of it?"), he said: the Hour.
