وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِۦ وَنَهَى ٱلنَّفْسَ عَنِ ٱلْهَوَىٰ

But as for he who feared the position of his Lord and prevented the soul from [unlawful] inclination,

    And His statement: وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِ وَنَهَى النَّفْسَ عَنِ الْهَوَى ("but as for him who feared standing before his Lord and forbade the soul from desire") — He says: But as for him who feared being interrogated by Allah at his standing on the Day of Resurrection in His presence, and therefore feared Him by performing His obligations (farāʾiḍ) and avoiding His acts of disobedience, وَنَهَى النَّفْسَ عَنِ الْهَوَى ("and forbade the soul from desire") — He says: and who forbade his soul its desire in that which Allah detests and does not accept from it, so that he restrained it from that and opposed its desire, directing himself toward that which his Lord had commanded him.

    وقوله: ( وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِ وَنَهَى النَّفْسَ عَنِ الْهَوَى ) يقول: وأما من خاف مسألة الله إياه عند وقوفه يوم القيامة بين يديه، فاتقاه بأداء فرائضه، واجتناب معاصيه، ( وَنَهَى النَّفْسَ عَنِ الْهَوَى ) يقول: ونهى نفسه عن هواها فيما يكرهه الله، ولا يرضاه منها، فزجرها عن ذلك، وخالف هواها إلى ما أمره به ربه .
