And preferred the life of the world,

His statement: وَآثَرَ الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا ("and preferred the worldly life") — He says: and he preferred the enjoyment of the worldly life over the honor of the Hereafter and what Allah has prepared therein for His friends (awliyāʾ). Thus he worked for the worldly life and exerted himself for it, and neglected to work for the Hereafter.
