وَٱلْجِبَالَ أَرْسَىٰهَا

And the mountains He set firmly

    His statement: وَالْجِبَالَ أَرْسَاهَا ("and the mountains He has firmly anchored") means: and the mountains He has set fast therein. In the sentence structure something has been omitted, the mention of which became superfluous on account of the indication that the words themselves give of it, namely "therein" (fīhā); for the meaning of the words is: and the mountains He has anchored therein.

    Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning وَالْجِبَالَ أَرْسَاهَا ("and the mountains He has firmly anchored"); that is: He set them fast, so that they would not shake to and fro with their inhabitants.

    Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Jarīr related to us, on the authority of ʿAṭāʾ, on the authority of Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī, on the authority of ʿAlī, who said: When Allah created the earth, it quaked and shrank together and said: Will You create upon me Adam and his offspring, who will cast their filth upon me and commit sins upon me? Then Allah anchored it with the mountains, some of which you see and some of which you do not see. Thus the first firmness of the earth was like the flesh of a slaughtered camel: when it is slaughtered, its flesh quivers and twitches afterward.

    وقوله: ( وَالْجِبَالَ أَرْسَاهَا ) يقول: والجبال أثبتها فيها، وفي الكلام متروك استغني بدلالة الكلام عليه من ذكره، وهو فيها، وذلك أن معنى الكلام: والجبال أرساها فيها. حدثنا بشر، قال: ثنا يزيد، قال: ثنا سعيد عن قتادة ( وَالْجِبَالَ أَرْسَاهَا ) أي: أثبتها لا تَمِيد بأهلها حدثنا ابن حميد، قال: ثنا جرير، عن عطاء، عن أبي عبد الرحمن السلمي، عن علي قال: لما خلق الله الأرض قمصت وقالت: تخلق عليّ آدم وذرّيته يلقون عليّ نتْنهم، ويعملون عليّ بالخطايا، فأرساها الله، فمنها ما ترون، ومنها ما لا ترون، فكان أوَّل قرار الأرض كلحم الجزور إذا نُحِر يحتلج لحمها.
