The explanation of His statement, the Exalted: ʿaynan yashrabu bihā ʿibādu llāhi yufajjirūnahā tafjīran (6) (a spring from which the servants of Allah drink, causing it to gush forth abundantly).

His statement: ʿaynan yashrabu bihā ʿibādu llāhi . The Exalted, praised be His mention, says: the mixture of the cup from which these righteous ones (al-abrār) drink was like camphor in the pleasantness of its scent, coming from a spring from which the servants of Allah drink, those whom He causes to enter Paradise. "The spring" is, in this explanation, in the accusative (naṣb) as an adverbial of state (ḥāl) referring to the suffix "its" in mizājuhā (its mixture). By His statement yashrabu bihā ʿibādu llāhi He means: they are given to drink from it and refreshed by it. It is also said: yashrabu bihā and yashrabuhā have the same meaning. Al-Farrāʾ mentioned that some recited to him the following:

"They drank from the water of the sea (sharibna bi-māʾi l-baḥri), then they rose up

to green deep waters with a murmuring sound" (1)

By his statement "min lujaj" (from deep waters) he meant "min" (from); likewise: he speaks with fine speech (yatakallamu bi-kalāmin ḥasanin) and he speaks fine speech (yatakallamu kalāman ḥasanan).

His statement: yufajjirūnahā tafjīran . The Exalted, praised be His mention, says: they cause that spring from which they drink to gush forth however they wish and wherever they wish, from their dwellings and palaces, gushing abundantly. By "the gushing forth" (al-tafjīr) He means: the causing to flow and stream.

And in accordance with what we have said about this, the exegetes have spoken.

    * Mention of who said that:

Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His statement: yufajjirūnahā tafjīran he said: they channel it wherever they wish.

Al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us, on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His statement: yufajjirūnahā tafjīran he said: they lead it wherever they wish.

Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: yufajjirūnahā tafjīran he said: its water has been placed at their disposal; they cause it to gush forth wherever they wish.

Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān: yufajjirūnahā tafjīran he said: they direct it wherever they wish.
