Tabari (1 passage)

  1. Full Dutch translation of Tabari's text

He, exalted is His mention, says: (وَمَا تَشَاءُونَ) — the taking of the way to your Lord, O people — (إِلَّا أَنْ يَشَاءَ اللَّهُ) (unless Allah wills) that for you, for the decree belongs to Him, not to you. And in the reading of ʿAbdallāh, according to what has been reported, it reads: (وَمَا تَشَاءُونَ إِلَّا مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ) (and you do not will, except what Allah wills).

And His word (إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ عَلِيمًا حَكِيمًا) (Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise) — none of you will pass beyond that which has already preceded concerning you in His knowledge regarding your destiny.
