Tafseer of Man · Al-Insaan · 76:30

And you do not will except that Allah wills. Indeed, Allah is ever Knowing and Wise.

Tabari (1 passage)

  1. Full Dutch translation of Tabari's text

His statement: يُدْخِلُ مَنْ يَشَاءُ فِي رَحْمَتِهِ ("He admits whom He wills into His mercy") means: your Lord admits whom He wills among you into His mercy, so that He grants him repentance until he dies repentant of his error, and forgives him his sins, and admits him into His paradise (janna). وَالظَّالِمِينَ أَعَدَّ لَهُمْ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا ("and for the wrongdoers He has prepared a painful punishment") means: those who wronged themselves and died upon their shirk (the ascribing of associates to Allah) — for them He has prepared in the Hereafter a painful, agonizing punishment (ʿadhāb), and that is the punishment of Hell (jahannam).

The accusative case in His statement والظَّالمِينَ ("and the wrongdoers") is because the wāw [here] is a determinant governed by "aʿadda" (He has prepared), and the meaning is: and for the wrongdoers He has prepared a painful punishment. It has been mentioned that in the recitation of ʿAbd Allāh [ibn Masʿūd] it reads: ولِلظَّالِمِينَ أعَدَّ لَهُمْ ("and for the wrongdoers He has prepared for them") with repetition of the lām. The Arabs sometimes do that; it is recited from one of them:

"I say to her, when she asks for divorce (ṭalāq): why do you hasten to forsake me?"

    And from another:

"They did not begin asking him concerning what [befell] him, whether he ascended in the intoxication of passion, or descended?"

    — with repetition of the bāʾ, while the intended construction is [really]: they do not ask him concerning what [befell] him.
