أَلَمْ يَكُ نُطْفَةًۭ مِّن مَّنِىٍّۢ يُمْنَىٰ

Had he not been a sperm from semen emitted?

    The Exalted says: was this human being, who denies the power of Allah to bring him back to life after his death and to create him anew after his decay, not nuṭfatan (a drop) — that is to say: a little water in the loins of the man, from the seed?

    The Qurʾān reciters differed concerning the reading of His word: yumnā. The majority of the reciters of Medina and Kūfa read it: tumnā with the tāʾ, in the meaning of: the nuṭfa is poured out. And some reciters of Mecca and Basra read it: yumnā with the yāʾ, in the meaning of: the seed (al-manī) is poured out.

    And the correct view is that these are two well-known readings, both correct in meaning; with whichever of the two the reciter reads, he is right.

    يقول تعالى ذكره: ألم يك هذا المنكر قدرة الله على إحيائه من بعد مماته، وإيجاده من بعد فنائه ( نُطْفَةً ) يعني: ماء قليلا في صلب الرجل من منيّ. واختلفت القرّاء في قراءة قوله: ( يُمْنَى ) فقرأه عامة قرّاء المدينة والكوفة: ( تُمْنَى ) بالتاء بمعنى: تمنى النطفة، وقرأ ذلك بعض قرّاء مكة والبصرة: ( يُمْنَى ) بالياء، بمعنى: يمنى المنيّ. والصواب من القول أنهما قراءتان معروفتان صحيحتا المعنى، فبأيتهما قرأ القارئ فمصيب.
