أَيَحْسَبُ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ أَن يُتْرَكَ سُدًى

Does man think that he will be left neglected?

And His word: A-yaḥsabu al-insānu an yutraka sudan (Does man think that he will be left unattended?) — the Exalted says: does this man, who is a disbeliever in Allah, think that he will be neglected, that nothing will be commanded to him nor forbidden, and that no act of worship will be imposed upon him?
And in accordance with what we have said about this, the scholars of interpretation have spoken.

ʿAlī related to me, saying: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His word: A-yaḥsabu al-insānu an yutraka sudan; he said: neglected.
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His word: A-yaḥsabu al-insānu an yutraka sudan; he said: that nothing is commanded to him nor forbidden.
Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His word: A-yaḥsabu al-insānu an yutraka sudan; al-Suddī said: the one upon whom no work is imposed and who performs no work.

وقوله: ( أَيَحْسَبُ الإنْسَانُ أَنْ يُتْرَكَ سُدًى ) يقول تعالى ذكره: أيظنّ هذا الإنسان الكافر بالله أن يترك هملا أن لا يؤمر ولا ينهى، ولا يتعبد بعبادة. وبنحو الذي قلنا في ذلك قال أهل التأويل. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثني عليّ، قال: ثنا أبو صالح، قال: ثني معاوية، عن عليّ، عن ابن عباس قوله: ( أَيَحْسَبُ الإنْسَانُ أَنْ يُتْرَكَ سُدًى ) يقول: هملا. حدثني محمد بن عمرو، قال: ثنا أبو عاصم، قال: ثنا عيسى، وحدثني الحارث، قال: ثنا الحسن، قال: ثنا ورقاء، جميعا عن ابن أبي نجيح، عن مجاهد، قوله: ( أَيَحْسَبُ الإنْسَانُ أَنْ يُتْرَكَ سُدًى ) قال: لا يُؤمر، ولا يُنْهى. حدثني يونس، قال: أخبرنا ابن وهب، قال: قال ابن زيد، في قوله: ( أَيَحْسَبُ الإنْسَانُ أَنْ يُتْرَكَ سُدًى ) قال السديّ: الذي لا يفترض عليه عمل ولا يعمل.
