Yūnus related that to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning وَقِيلَ مَنْ رَاقٍ (And it is said: who can heal?): the Exalted says: and his family members say: who is there that can recite an incantation over him, so that he may heal him of that which has befallen him? And they sought for him physicians and healers, but they availed him nothing against the command of Allah that had befallen him.
The scholars of interpretation differed concerning the meaning of His word: مَنْ رَاقٍ. Some of them said something that accords with what we have said about it.
* Mention of who said that:
Abū Kurayb and Abū Hishām related to us, both saying: Wakīʿ related to us, on the authority of Isrāʾīl, on the authority of Simāk, on the authority of ʿIkrima: وَقِيلَ مَنْ رَاقٍ; he said: is there an incanter who recites an incantation?
Abū Kurayb and Abū Hishām related to us, both saying: Wakīʿ related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of Sulaymān al-Taymī, on the authority of Shabīb, on the authority of Abū Qilāba: وَقِيلَ مَنْ رَاقٍ; he said: is there a healing physician?
Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of Sulaymān al-Taymī, on the authority of Shabīb, on the authority of Abū Qilāba, something similar.
Al-Ḥasan ibn ʿArafa related to us, saying: Marwān ibn Muʿāwiya related to us, on the authority of Abū Bisṭām, on the authority of al-Ḍaḥḥāk ibn Muzāḥim, concerning the word of Allah, the Exalted: وَقِيلَ مَنْ رَاقٍ; he said: it is the physician.
Abū Kurayb related to us, saying: Ibn Idrīs related to us, on the authority of Juwaybir, on the authority of al-Ḍaḥḥāk: وَقِيلَ مَنْ رَاقٍ; he said: is there a healer?
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: وَقِيلَ مَنْ رَاقٍ; that is to say: they sought for him physicians, but they availed him nothing against the decree of Allah.
Yūnus related to us, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His word: وَقِيلَ مَنْ رَاقٍ; he said: where are the physicians? And the incanters: who can recite an incantation over him against death?
Others said: no, this belongs to the words that the angels say to one another; some of them say to others: who will ascend with this soul and carry it upward?
* Mention of who said that:
Abū Hishām related to us, saying: Muʿādh ibn Hishām related to us, saying: my father related to me, on the authority of ʿAmr ibn Mālik, on the authority of Abū al-Jawzāʾ, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās: كَلَّا إِذَا بَلَغَتِ التَّرَاقِيَ وَقِيلَ مَنْ رَاقٍ (No! When it reaches the collarbones, and it is said: who can ascend?); he said: when his soul reaches the point at which it is carried upward, the angels say: who will ascend with it — the angels of mercy or the angels of punishment?
Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: al-Muʿtamir related to us, on the authority of his father, concerning His word: وَقِيلَ مَنْ رَاقٍ; he said: it reached me from Abū Qilāba that he said: is there a physician? And he said: it reached me from Abū al-Jawzāʾ that he said: the angels said to one another: who will ascend — the angels of mercy or the angels of punishment?
And His word: وَظَنَّ أَنَّهُ الْفِرَاقُ (And he becomes certain that it is the parting) — the Exalted says: and the one whom this has befallen knows for certain that it is the parting from the worldly life, from family, wealth, and children.
And in accordance with what we have said about it, the scholars of interpretation have spoken.
