His word: إِلَى رَبِّكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ الْمُسْتَقَرُّ ("To your Lord on that Day is the resting place"). The Exalted — praised be His mention — says: to your Lord, O man, is on that Day the settling (al-istiqrār), and He it is who settles all His creatures in their resting place.
The exegetes (ahl al-taʾwīl) differed over its interpretation. Some of them said something in accordance with what we have said about it.
* Mention of who said that:
Yūnus related to us, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His word: إِلَى رَبِّكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ الْمُسْتَقَرُّ ("To your Lord on that Day is the resting place"): he said: the people of the Garden (janna) settled in the Garden, and the people of the Fire in the Fire. And he recited the word of Allah: وَإِنَّ الدَّارَ الآخِرَةَ لَهِيَ الْحَيَوَانُ لَوْ كَانُوا يَعْلَمُونَ ("And indeed, the Hereafter — that is truly the [real] Life, if only they knew").
Others said: what is meant by this is: to your Lord is the final destination (al-muntahā).
* Mention of who said that:
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: إِلَى رَبِّكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ الْمُسْتَقَرُّ ("To your Lord on that Day is the resting place"): that is to say: the final destination.
The Exalted — praised be His mention — says: man will be informed on that Day, that is to say: on the Day when the sun and the moon are brought together and rolled up, about what he has sent ahead and left behind.
