And His words: "And be patient for the sake of your Lord" — the Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: and for the sake of your Lord be patient with the detestable things that befall you therein (for His sake).

In the spirit of what we have said about this, a group of the people of interpretation spoke, with a difference among them in this — among the people of interpretation.

    * Mention of who said that:

Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to us, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us, both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His words: "And be patient for the sake of your Lord," he said: with what has been imposed upon you.

Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said, concerning His words: "And be patient for the sake of your Lord," he said: he bore a tremendous task: the fighting of the Arabs, and after that the non-Arabs after the Arabs, for the sake of Allah.

Others said: rather, its meaning is: and for the sake of your Lord be patient with your gift.

    * Mention of who said that:

Abū Kurayb related to us, saying: Wakīʿ related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of Mughīra, on the authority of Ibrāhīm: "And be patient for the sake of your Lord," he said: be patient with your gift.

Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of Mughīra, on the authority of Ibrāhīm, he said: for the sake of Allah be patient with your gift.

Ibn Bashshār related to us, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: Sufyān related to us, on the authority of Mughīra, on the authority of Ibrāhīm, concerning His words: "And be patient for the sake of your Lord," he said: your gift, be patient with it.

He, exalted be His praise, means by His words: "Then when the trumpet is blown," that it is then, on that day, a grievous day.

In the spirit of what we have said about this, the people of interpretation spoke.

    * Mention of who said that:

Abū Kurayb related to us, saying: Ibn Fuḍayl and Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of Muṭarrif, on the authority of ʿAṭiyya al-ʿAwfī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His words: "Then when the trumpet is blown, that day is a hard day," the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "How could I rest at ease and enjoy myself, while the bearer of the horn has already taken the horn into his mouth and bowed his forehead, listening for when he is commanded to blow it?" Then the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: how should we (then) say? He said: you say: "Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs; upon Allah we have relied."
