Tafseer of The Cloaked One · Al-Muddaththir · 74:6
And do not confer favor to acquire more

His statement: وَلا تَمْنُنْ تَسْتَكْثِرُ (And do not give in order to receive more in return). The exegetes of the Qurʾān (ahl al-taʾwīl) differed concerning the interpretation of this. Some of them said that the meaning of it is: do not give, O Muḥammad, a gift with the intention that you receive more in return for it.

Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: my father related to me, saying: my uncle related to me, saying: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning his statement: وَلا تَمْنُنْ تَسْتَكْثِرُ , he said: do not give a gift by which you seek something better than it in return.
Abū Ḥumayd al-Ḥimṣī Aḥmad ibn al-Mughīra related to us, saying: Abū Ḥaywa Shurayḥ ibn Yazīd al-Ḥaḍramī related to me, saying: Arṭāt related to me, on the authority of Ḍamra ibn Ḥabīb and Abū al-Aḥwaṣ, concerning his statement: وَلا تَمْنُنْ تَسْتَكْثِرُ , he said: do not give anything in order to receive more for it in return.
Yaʿqūb related to me, saying: Ibn ʿUlayya related to us, on the authority of Abū Rajāʾ, on the authority of ʿIkrima, concerning his statement: وَلا تَمْنُنْ تَسْتَكْثِرُ , he said: do not give anything in order to receive more for it in return.
Ibn al-Muthannā related to us, saying: Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar related to us, saying: Shuʿba related to us, saying: someone who heard ʿIkrima informed me that he said: وَلا تَمْنُنْ تَسْتَكْثِرُ , he said: do not give a gift with the wish to take more for it.
Yaḥyā ibn Ṭalḥa al-Yarbūʿī related to me, saying: Fuḍayl related to us, on the authority of Manṣūr, on the authority of Ibrāhīm, وَلا تَمْنُنْ تَسْتَكْثِرُ , he said: do not give in order to get more.
Ibn Bashshār related to us, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: Sufyān related to us, on the authority of Mughīra, on the authority of Ibrāhīm, concerning his statement: وَلا تَمْنُنْ تَسْتَكْثِرُ , he said: do not give anything in order to take more for it.
Abū Kurayb related to us, saying: Wakīʿ related to us, on the authority of Salama, on the authority of al-Ḍaḥḥāk, وَلا تَمْنُنْ تَسْتَكْثِرُ , he said: do not give in order to receive more for it in return.
He said: Wakīʿ related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of Mughīra, on the authority of Ibrāhīm, concerning his statement: وَلا تَمْنُنْ تَسْتَكْثِرُ , he said: do not give in order to receive more for it in return.
Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Jarīr related to us, on the authority of Manṣūr, on the authority of Ibrāhīm, concerning his statement: وَلا تَمْنُنْ تَسْتَكْثِرُ , he said: do not give anything in order to get more for it.
Abū Kurayb related to us, saying: Wakīʿ related to us, on the authority of Ibn Abī Rawwād, on the authority of al-Ḍaḥḥāk, he said: it is the permitted usury (ribā), which applied exclusively to the Prophet ﷺ.
Abū Kurayb related to us, saying: Wakīʿ related to us, on the authority of Abū Ḥujayra, on the authority of al-Ḍaḥḥāk: there are two kinds of ribā, a permitted one and a forbidden one; the permitted ones are gifts, and the forbidden one is usury.
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning his statement: وَلا تَمْنُنْ تَسْتَكْثِرُ , he says: do not give anything while your motive is the reward of the worldly life and its recompense.
Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, وَلا تَمْنُنْ تَسْتَكْثِرُ , he said: do not give anything in order to receive something better than it as a reward in return. And Ṭāwūs said this as well.
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning his statement: وَلا تَمْنُنْ تَسْتَكْثِرُ , he said: you give wealth as a favor in the hope of something better than it as reward in the worldly life.
Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of Mughīra, on the authority of Ibrāhīm, he said: do not give in order to receive more for it in return.
He said: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of Manṣūr, on the authority of Ibrāhīm, وَلا تَمْنُنْ تَسْتَكْثِرُ , he said: do not give in order to get more.
He said: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of a man, on the authority of al-Ḍaḥḥāk ibn Muzāḥim, وَلا تَمْنُنْ تَسْتَكْثِرُ , he said: this applied exclusively to the Prophet ﷺ, while for people in general it was more broadly permitted.
And others said: no, the meaning of this is: and do not regard your deed as a favor toward your Lord while you consider it to be much.

Mujāhid ibn Mūsā related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Sufyān ibn Ḥusayn related to us, on the authority of al-Ḥasan, concerning his statement: وَلا تَمْنُنْ تَسْتَكْثِرُ , he said: do not regard your deed as a favor toward your Lord by considering it to be much.
Muḥammad ibn Bashshār related to us, saying: Hawdha related to us, saying: ʿAwf related to us, on the authority of al-Ḥasan, وَلا تَمْنُنْ تَسْتَكْثِرُ , he said: do not regard your deed as a favor by considering it to be much.
Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Yaḥyā ibn Wāḍiḥ related to us, saying: Yūnus ibn Nāfiʿ Abū Ghānim related to us, on the authority of Abū Sahl Kathīr ibn Ziyād, on the authority of al-Ḥasan, وَلا تَمْنُنْ تَسْتَكْثِرُ , he says: do not regard your good deed as a favor by considering it to be much.
Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of Abū Jaʿfar, on the authority of al-Rabīʿ ibn Anas, وَلا تَمْنُنْ تَسْتَكْثِرُ , he said: do not let your deed appear great in your eyes, for in comparison with the favors with which Allah has graced you and which He has given you, it is small.
And others said: no, the meaning of this is: do not become too weak to do much good. They explained the meaning of His statement وَلا تَمْنُنْ as: do not become weak, derived from their expression "ḥabl manīn" (a weak rope), when it is weak.

Abū Ḥumayd ibn al-Mughīra al-Ḥimṣī related to us, saying: ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr related to us, saying: Muḥammad ibn Salama related to us, on the authority of Khaṣīf, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning his statement: وَلا تَمْنُنْ تَسْتَكْثِرُ , he said: do not become too weak to do much good. He said: "tamnun" means in the language of the Arabs: to become weak.
And yet others said concerning this: do not regard prophethood as a favor toward the people for which you accept a reward from them.

Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said, concerning his statement: وَلا تَمْنُنْ تَسْتَكْثِرُ , he said: do not regard the prophethood and the Qurʾān with which We have sent you as a favor toward them by which you consider them to be much, and for which you accept a worldly recompense.
And the most correct of these statements, in my opinion, is the statement of the one who said: the meaning of this is: do not regard your good deed as a favor toward your Lord by considering it to be much.
And I have said that this is the most correct, because this stands in the context of verses that precede it, in which Allah commands His Prophet ﷺ to exert himself in the call to Him and to be patient with the harm he encounters therein. That this passage belongs to that kind of verses is therefore more likely than that it belongs to something else. And it has been related from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd that in his recitation this read: ولا تمنن أن تستكثر (and do not regard it as a favor that you do much).
