ʿAlī related to me, saying: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His word: ( إِنَّهُ كَانَ لآيَاتِنَا عَنِيدًا ) (verily, he was obstinate toward Our signs) — he said: denying.
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us, both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His word: ( إِنَّهُ كَانَ لآيَاتِنَا عَنِيدًا ) — Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr said: resisting it. And al-Ḥārith said: turning away from it, withdrawing himself from it.
Abū Kurayb related to us, saying: Wakīʿ related to us, on the authority of Isrāʾīl, on the authority of Jābir, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His word: ( عَنِيدًا ) — he said: resisting the truth, withdrawing himself from it.
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: ( إِنَّهُ كَانَ لآيَاتِنَا عَنِيدًا ) — ungrateful toward the signs of Allah and denying them.
Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān: ( لآيَاتِنَا عَنِيدًا ) — he said: opposing. And it has been said: ʿanīd is derived from ʿānada muʿānadatan, so that he is muʿānid, just as one says: ʿām qābil (the coming year), while in reality it means muqbil (approaching).
