  1. Full Dutch translation of Tabari's text

His word: رَبُّ الْمَشْرِقِ وَالْمَغْرِبِ ("The Lord of the east and the west"). The Qurʾān reciters (qurrāʾ) differ over the reading of this. Most of the reciters of Medina read it with rafʿ (nominative), as the beginning of a new sentence, because it is the beginning of a complete new āyah after the preceding one. Most of the reciters of Kūfa read it with khafḍ (genitive), as an adjectival qualifier (naʿt), referring back to the "hāʾ" in His word: وَتَبَتَّلْ إِلَيْهِ ("and devote yourself wholly to Him").

The correct ruling concerning this, in our view, is that they are two well-known readings, each of which has been read by learned reciters; with whichever of the two the reciter recites, he is correct. The meaning of the words is: the Lord of the east and the west and of whatever worlds lie between them.

His word: لا إِلَهَ إِلا هُوَ ("There is no god but He"). He says: it is not fitting that any god be worshipped except Allah, who is the Lord of the east and the west.

His word: فَاتَّخِذْهُ وَكِيلا ("so take Him as a trustee") — in what He commands you, and entrust your affairs to Him.

His word: وَاصْبِرْ عَلَى مَا يَقُولُونَ وَاهْجُرْهُمْ هَجْرًا جَمِيلا ("And be patient with what they say, and withdraw from them in a seemly manner"). He, exalted is His mention, says to His prophet Muḥammad ﷺ: be patient, O Muḥammad, with what the polytheists (mushrikīn) of your people say against you, and with their harassment, and withdraw from them for the sake of Allah in a seemly manner. The seemly withdrawal (al-hajr al-jamīl) is the withdrawal for the sake of Allah, as He, mighty and exalted, has said: "And when you see those who engage in mockery concerning Our signs, turn away from them until they engage in some other discourse" ... to the end of the āyah. And it has been said that this is abrogated (nusikha).
