And leave Me with [the matter of] the deniers, those of ease [in life], and allow them respite a little.

By His statement — exalted is His mention — وَذَرْنِي وَالْمُكَذِّبِينَ ("And leave Me with the deniers") is meant: leave Me, O Muḥammad, with those who deny My signs, أُولِي النَّعْمَةِ ("the people of luxury"), that is to say: the people who live in abundance in the worldly life, وَمَهِّلْهُمْ قَلِيلا ("and grant them respite for a little while"). He says: and postpone for them the punishment that I have prepared for them for a little while, until the decreed matter reaches its appointed term.
And it has been mentioned that the time between the revelation of this verse and the Battle of Badr was short.
* Mention of those who said that:
Yaʿqūb ibn Ibrāhīm related to me, saying: Ibn ʿUlayya related to us, on the authority of Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbād, on the authority of his father, on the authority of ʿAbbād, on the authority of ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Zubayr, on the authority of ʿĀʾisha, who said: When this verse was revealed: وَذَرْنِي وَالْمُكَذِّبِينَ أُولِي النَّعْمَةِ وَمَهِّلْهُمْ قَلِيلا إِنَّ لَدَيْنَا أَنْكَالا وَجَحِيمًا ("And leave Me with the deniers, the people of luxury, and grant them respite for a little while; indeed, with Us are shackles and a blazing Fire")... the verse, he said: only a short time passed until the event of Badr took place.
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, who said: Allah says: وَذَرْنِي وَالْمُكَذِّبِينَ أُولِي النَّعْمَةِ وَمَهِّلْهُمْ قَلِيلا ("And leave Me with the deniers, the people of luxury, and grant them respite for a little while"). He says: Allah has with them an account to settle and a demand to make.
And His statement: إِنَّ لَدَيْنَا أَنْكَالا وَجَحِيمًا ("Indeed, with Us are shackles and a blazing Fire"). He — exalted is His mention — says: indeed, with Us, for these who deny Our signs, are shackles, that is to say fetters; the singular of which is: nikl.
And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the people of tafsīr (exegesis) have spoken.
