Say, "I do not know if what you are promised is near or if my Lord will grant for it a [long] period."

The explanation of the words of the Exalted: "Say: I do not know whether that which you are promised is near, or whether my Lord has set a term for it."
The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says to His Prophet: Say, O Muḥammad, to these polytheists of your people who assign associates to Allah: I do not know whether that which your Lord promises you of punishment and of the coming of the Hour is near — "or whether my Lord has set a term for it" — that is to say: a known endpoint whose duration is stretched out long.
