The explanation of His, the Exalted's, statement: And that among us are the Muslims (al-muslimūn), and among us are the deviators (al-qāsiṭūn); and whoever submits, these sought out the right path (14) And as for the deviators, they are firewood for Hell (Jahannam) (15).

He, exalted be His remembrance, says, informing about what the company of jinn said: (And that among us are the Muslims), who have submitted themselves to Allah through obedience, (and among us are the deviators), and they are those who deviate from Islam and from the straight path.

And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the people of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) spoke.

    * Mention of who said that:

Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: My father related to me, saying: My uncle related to me, saying: My father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His statement: (And that among us are the Muslims, and among us are the deviators): he said: those who deviate from the truth.

Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His statement: (al-qāsiṭūn, the deviators): he said: the wrongdoers.

Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, he said: (al-qāsiṭūn, the deviators): the strayers.

Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His statement: (al-qāsiṭūn, the deviators): he said: the strayers.

Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said: al-muqsiṭ is the just one, and al-qāsiṭ is the strayer; and he cited a verse:

"We were unjust (qasaṭnā) toward the kings in the time of Tubbaʿ, and before that already [someone] let the souls know their punishment." (1)

And he said: This is like al-tarib and al-mutrib. He said: al-tarib is the needy one, and he recited: or a needy person in the dust (dhā matraba). He said: and al-mutrib is the rich one.

And His statement: (and whoever submits, these sought out the right path). He says: and whoever submits and subjects himself to Allah through obedience, these set as their aim and cherished the hope of right guidance in their religion.

    Footnotes:

    (1) The verse was adduced by Ibn Zayd the transmitter as proof that the meaning of al-qāsiṭīn is: the strayers. Al-Farrāʾ said in Maʿānī al-Qurʾān (folio 344): And His statement (and among us are the deviators) — and they are the strayers, the disbelievers. And al-muqsiṭūn: the just ones, the Muslims.
