But my invitation increased them not except in flight.

(But my call only increased their aversion) (71:6). He says: My call to them toward that to which I called them — the truth with which Thou hast sent me to them — only increased them (in flight), that is to say: in turning away from it, fleeing from it, and turning their backs upon it.
And Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā has already related to us, saying: Muḥammad ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His words: (But my call only increased their aversion) (71:6). He said: It has reached us that a man would bring his son to Nūḥ, and then would say to his son: "Beware of this man, lest he mislead you." And [the man further said:] "My father also brought me to him when I was just like you, and he warned me as I have warned you."
