And His statement: (And indeed, every time I called them so that You might forgive them, they thrust their fingers into their ears) — the Exalted and Mighty says: and indeed, every time I called them to the acknowledgment of Your oneness, and to rendering obedience to You, and to freeing themselves from the worship of all besides You, so that You might forgive them if they were to do so, they thrust their fingers into their ears so that they would not hear my call to them to that. (and they covered themselves with their garments) — He says: and they covered themselves in their garments, and they wrapped themselves in them so that they would not hear my call.

And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the exegetes spoke.

    * Mention of who said that:

Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said, concerning His statement: (they thrust their fingers into their ears) — so that they would not hear the words of Nūḥ, peace be upon him.

And His statement: (and they persisted) — He says: and they continued steadfast in that disbelief in which they were, and they clung to it.

And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the exegetes spoke.
