His statement: ( And Nūḥ said: My Lord, do not leave upon the earth a single dweller from among the unbelievers ) By al-dayyār He means: the one who roams about the earth, who goes back and forth upon it. It is a fayʿāl form derived from al-dawarān (roaming about): diwārān; the yāʾ and the wāw came together, and the yāʾ preceded the wāw while it was unvocalized, so the wāw was assimilated into it, and the two became a doubled yāʾ, just as one says: al-ḥayy al-qiyām (the Living, the Subsisting) from qumtu, while its original form is qiywām. The Arabs say: there is not in it a dayyār nor an ʿarīb, nor a duwwiyy nor a ṣāfir, nor a blower of a small fire — by all of which they mean: there is no one in it.

The explanation of His statement, the Exalted: (28) ( Indeed, if You leave them, they will lead Your servants astray, and they will beget none but a wicked, persistent unbeliever (27) My Lord, forgive me and my parents and whoever enters my house as a believer, and the believing men and the believing women, and increase the wrongdoers in nothing but destruction (28) )

He, exalted is His mention, says, reporting the words of Nūḥ in his supplication to Him against his people: indeed, O my Lord, if You leave the unbelievers alive upon the earth and do not destroy them with a punishment from You, ( they will lead Your servants astray ) who have already believed in You, and they will turn them away from Your path, ( and they will beget none but a wicked one ) in Your religion ( a persistent unbeliever ) toward Your favor.

And it is mentioned that Nūḥ's utterance of these words and his supplication with this prayer took place after his Lord had revealed to him: that none of your people will believe except whoever has already believed .
