His statement: ( what is the matter with you that you do not anticipate any reverence for Allah ) — the exegetes differed concerning its interpretation. Some of them said: its meaning is: what is the matter with you that you do not ascribe greatness to Allah.
* Mention of those who said that:
ʿAlī related to me, saying: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, ( what is the matter with you that you do not anticipate any reverence for Allah ) he says: greatness.
Ibn Bashshār related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān related to us, saying: Sufyān related to us, on the authority of Manṣūr, on the authority of Mujāhid, ( what is the matter with you that you do not anticipate any reverence for Allah ) he said: you do not ascribe greatness to Allah.
Muḥammad ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, in the same manner.
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us, on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ and Qays, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His statement: ( you do not anticipate any reverence for Allah ) he said: you do not care about the greatness of Allah.
Abū Kurayb related to us, saying: ʿAmr ibn ʿUbayd related to us, on the authority of Manṣūr, on the authority of Mujāhid, ( what is the matter with you that you do not anticipate any reverence for Allah ) he said: they did not care about the greatness of Allah.
It was related to me on the authority of al-Ḥusayn, saying: I heard Abū Muʿādh say: ʿUbayd related to us, saying: I heard al-Ḍaḥḥāk say concerning His statement: ( you do not anticipate any reverence for Allah ) he says: greatness.
Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Jarīr related to us, on the authority of Manṣūr, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His statement: ( what is the matter with you that you do not anticipate any reverence for Allah ) he said: you do not care about the greatness of your Lord; he said: and the anticipating (al-rajāʾ) is the desiring and the fearing.
And others said: its meaning is: you do not magnify Allah as He rightly ought to be magnified.
* Mention of those who said that:
Salm ibn Junāda related to me, saying: Abū Muʿāwiya related to us, on the authority of Ismāʿīl ibn Sumayʿ, on the authority of Muslim al-Baṭīn, on the authority of Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, ( what is the matter with you that you do not anticipate any reverence for Allah ) he said: what is the matter with you that you do not magnify Allah as He rightly ought to be magnified.
And others said: what is the matter with you that you do not ascribe greatness to Allah.
* Mention of those who said that:
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: my father related to me, saying: my uncle related to me, saying: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His statement: ( what is the matter with you that you do not anticipate any reverence for Allah ) he says: what is the matter with you that you do not ascribe greatness to Allah.
And others said: no, its meaning is: what is the matter with you that you do not anticipate any final outcome from Allah.
* Mention of those who said that:
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His statement: ( what is the matter with you that you do not anticipate any reverence for Allah ) that is, a final outcome.
Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, ( what is the matter with you that you do not anticipate any reverence for Allah ) he said: you do not anticipate any final outcome from Allah.
And others said: no, its meaning is: what is the matter with you that you do not anticipate any obedience from Allah.
* Mention of those who said that:
Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning Allah's statement: ( what is the matter with you that you do not anticipate any reverence for Allah ) he said: the reverence (al-waqār) is obedience.
And the most sound of those statements, in our view, is the statement of those who said: its meaning is: what is the matter with you that you do not fear the greatness of Allah; and that is because the Arabs, when "the anticipating" (al-rajāʾ) is accompanied by a negation, sometimes place it in the stead of "the fearing," as Abū Dhuʾayb said:
When the bees stung him, he did not fear their sting, and he braved them at a nest of honey-cutting bees.
By his words "and he did not fear" (lam yarji) he means: he was not afraid.
