The explanation of His word, the Exalted: يُرْسِلِ السَّمَاءَ عَلَيْكُمْ مِدْرَارًا ( then He sends down the sky upon you with abundant rain ) (71:11)
His word: ( then He sends down the sky upon you with abundant rain ) He says: your Lord will grant you rain, if you repent, acknowledge Him as One, and devote worship purely to Him, and He will therefore send down the sky upon you with abundant, continuous rain.
And Yūnus ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā has already related to me, saying: Sufyān informed us, on the authority of Muṭarrif, on the authority of al-Shaʿbī, who said: ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb went out to pray for rain, and he added nothing to the asking for forgiveness (al-istighfār), and then returned. They said: O Commander of the Believers, we did not see you pray for rain. He said: indeed, I sought the rain with the keys of heaven by which the rain is sent down, and thereupon he recited ( Ask your Lord for forgiveness, truly He is Most Forgiving, then He sends down the sky upon you with abundant rain ), and he recited the verse that is in Surah Hūd until he reached: and He will add strength to your strength .
