As for His statement: (truly, you are among those who have been granted respite), there is no indication therein were it not for the other verse in which He clarified the duration of the respite that He granted him for that purpose, namely His statement: (Then truly you are among those who have been granted respite * until the Day of the appointed time) [Surah al-Ḥijr: 37, 38 / Surah Ṣād: 80, 81]: how long the duration is for which He granted him respite. For had He granted him respite for one day, or less than that or more, then he would already have entered into the number of those granted respite, and Allah's true promise concerning him would have been fulfilled; but He clarified the measure of its duration with that which we have mentioned, so that thereby the time became known until which he was granted respite.

And in accordance with this, al-Suddī used to say.

14360 – Mūsā ibn Hārūn related to me, saying: ʿAmr related to us, saying: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī: (He said: My Lord, grant me respite until the Day on which they are resurrected * He said: Then truly you are among those who have been granted respite * until the Day of the appointed time) [Surah al-Ḥijr: 36-38 / Surah Ṣād: 80, 81]: He did not grant him respite until the Day of Resurrection, but He granted him respite until the Day of the appointed time, and that is the day on which the first blast is blown into the trumpet, so that whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth swoons and dies.

Abū Jaʿfar said: The interpretation of the statement is therefore: Iblīs said to his Lord: "Grant me respite", that is to say: defer me and give me reprieve, and prolong my lifespan, and do not cause me to die, إِلَى يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ (until the Day on which they are resurrected), he says: until the Day on which the creation is resurrected. Then the Exalted, whose mention is exalted, said: (truly, you are among those who have been granted respite), until the Day on which the trumpet is blown, so that whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth swoons, except whom Allah wills.

If a questioner says: Is there anyone who has been granted respite until that Day besides Iblīs, such that it is said to him: "truly, you are among them"?

Then it is answered: Yes, everyone of His creatures whose soul Allah does not take until that Day, among those over whom the Hour breaks; they are among those who have been granted respite with regard to their appointed terms until that Day. And for this reason it was said to Iblīs: (truly, you are among those who have been granted respite), with the meaning: truly, you are among those whom Allah does not cause to die except on that Day.
