Then We would have cut from him the aorta.

Sulaymān ibn ʿAbd al-Jabbār related to me, saying: Muḥammad ibn al-Ṣalt related to us, saying: Abū Kudayna related to us, on the authority of ʿAṭāʾ, on the authority of Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning laqaṭaʿnā minhu al-watīn (then We would surely have severed his aorta): he said: it is the artery of the heart.
Ibn al-Muthannā related to me, saying: Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar related to us, saying: Shuʿba related to us, on the authority of ʿAṭāʾ, on the authority of Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, with something equivalent.
Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Ḥakkām related to us, on the authority of ʿAmr, on the authority of ʿAṭāʾ, on the authority of Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, with something equivalent.
Yaʿqūb related to me, saying: Hushaym related to us, on the authority of ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib, on the authority of Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, who said: Ibn ʿAbbās said concerning al-watīn (the aorta): it is the artery of the heart.
Ibn Bashshār related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān related to us, saying: Sufyān related to us, on the authority of ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib, on the authority of Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, with something similar.
Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mihrān related to us, saying: Sufyān related to us, on the authority of Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, with something equivalent.
ʿAlī related to me, saying: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning his word thumma laqaṭaʿnā minhu al-watīn (then We would surely have severed his aorta): he says: the vein of the heart.
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: my father related to me, saying: my uncle related to me, saying: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning his word thumma laqaṭaʿnā minhu al-watīn (then We would surely have severed his aorta): he means: a vein in the heart, and it is said: it is a cord in the heart.
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us, both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning his word al-watīn (the aorta): he said: the cord of the heart which is located in the back.
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning his word thumma laqaṭaʿnā minhu al-watīn (then We would surely have severed his aorta): he said: the cord of the heart.
It was related to me on the authority of al-Ḥusayn, who said: I heard Abū Muʿādh say: ʿUbayd informed us, saying: I heard al-Ḍaḥḥāk say concerning his word laqaṭaʿnā minhu al-watīn (then We would surely have severed his aorta): the aorta of the heart, and that is a vein located in the heart; when it is severed, the person dies.
Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning his word thumma laqaṭaʿnā minhu al-watīn (then We would surely have severed his aorta): he said: the watīn is the artery of the heart to which the heart is attached, and to this al-Shammākh ibn Ḍirār al-Taghlibī alluded with his verse:
When you have brought me and carried my saddle to ʿArāba, then choke on the blood of the aorta.
