وَلَا طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِنْ غِسْلِينٍۢ

Nor any food except from the discharge of wounds;

    ﴿ وَلا طَعَامٌ إِلا مِنْ غِسْلِينٍ ﴾ ("Nor any food except from ghislīn") — He, exalted be His praise, says: and he has no food — just as in this worldly life he did not urge the feeding of the poor — except food from ghislīn, and that is what flows of festering matter and pus from the people of the Fire (ahl al-nār).

    One of the Arabic philologists of Basra said: every wound that you wash and from which something comes out, that is ghislīn; it is of the pattern fiʿlīn, derived from the washing (al-ghasl) of wounds and sores, and the yāʾ and the nūn are added to it, in the manner of the word ʿifrīn.

    And in accordance with what we have said concerning its interpretation, the people of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) have spoken.

    ʿAlī related to me, he said: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, he said: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His word: ﴿ وَلا طَعَامٌ إِلا مِنْ غِسْلِينٍ ﴾ ("Nor any food except from ghislīn"): the pus of the people of the Fire.

    Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, he said: my father related to me, he said: my uncle related to me, he said: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His word: ﴿ وَلا طَعَامٌ إِلا مِنْ غِسْلِينٍ ﴾ ("Nor any food except from ghislīn"), he said: it is what comes out of their flesh.

    Bishr related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word: ﴿ وَلا طَعَامٌ إِلا مِنْ غِسْلِينٍ ﴾ ("Nor any food except from ghislīn"): the worst food, the most repugnant and the most loathsome.

    And Ibn Zayd used to say concerning that what Yūnus related to me, he said: Ibn Wahb informed us, he said: Ibn Zayd said concerning His word: ﴿ وَلا طَعَامٌ إِلا مِنْ غِسْلِينٍ ﴾ ("Nor any food except from ghislīn"), he said: the ghislīn and the zaqqūm — no one knows what that is.

    (وَلا طَعَامٌ إِلا مِنْ غِسْلِينٍ ) يقول جلّ ثناؤه: ولا له طعام كما كان لا يحضّ في الدنيا على طعام المسكين، إلا طعام من غسلين، وذلك ما يسيل من صديد أهل النار. وكان بعض أهل العربية من أهل البصرة يقول: كلّ جرح غسلته فخرج منه شيء فهو غسلين، فعلين من الغسل من الجراح والدَّبر، وزيد فيه الياء والنون بمنـزلة عفرين. وبنحو الذي قلنا في تأويل ذلك قال أهل التأويل. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثني عليّ، قال: ثنا أبو صالح، قال: ثني معاوية، عن عليّ، عن ابن عباس، قوله: (وَلا طَعَامٌ إِلا مِنْ غِسْلِينٍ ): صديد أهل النار. حدثني محمد بن سعد، قال: ثني أبي، قال: ثني عمي، قال: ثني أبي، عن أبيه، عن ابن عباس، قوله: (وَلا طَعَامٌ إِلا مِنْ غِسْلِينٍ ) قال: ما يخرج من لحومهم. حدثنا بشر، قال: ثنا يزيد، قال: ثنا سعيد، عن قتادة، قوله: (وَلا طَعَامٌ إِلا مِنْ غِسْلِينٍ ): شرّ الطعام وأخبثه وأبشعه. وكان ابن زيد يقول في ذلك ما حدثني يونس، قال: أخبرنا ابن وهب، قال، قال ابن زيد، في قوله: (وَلا طَعَامٌ إِلا مِنْ غِسْلِينٍ ) قال: الغسلين والزقوم لا يعلم أحد ما هو.
