His statement: كُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا هَنِيئًا بِمَا أَسْلَفْتُمْ فِي الأيَّامِ الْخَالِيَةِ ("Eat and drink with relish, on account of what you sent ahead in the days gone by"). Their Lord, whose praise be exalted, says to them: eat, O company of those with whom I am well pleased and whom I admit into My paradise, of its fruits and the best of the foods that are in it, and drink of its drinks, with relish for you; you will suffer no harm from what you eat, nor from what you drink, and on account of eating it you will have no need of excrement nor urine. بِمَا أَسْلَفْتُمْ فِي الأيَّامِ الْخَالِيَةِ ("on account of what you sent ahead in the days gone by"); he says: eat and drink with relish, as a recompense from Allah to you and as a reward on account of what you sent ahead, or for what you sent ahead, that is to say: for what you performed in your world for your Hereafter of works in obedience to Allah; في الأيام الخالية ("in the days gone by"); he says: in the days of the world that have passed and elapsed.

And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the exegetes have spoken.

    * Mention of who said that:

Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, who said: Allah said: كُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا هَنِيئًا بِمَا أَسْلَفْتُمْ فِي الأيَّامِ الْخَالِيَةِ ("Eat and drink with relish, on account of what you sent ahead in the days gone by"). Indeed, these days of yours are passing days: they are perishable days that lead to lasting days; so work in these days, and send ahead therein good if you are able to do so — and there is no power except through Allah.

Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His statement بِمَا أَسْلَفْتُمْ فِي الأيَّامِ الْخَالِيَةِ ("on account of what you sent ahead in the days gone by"), he said: the days of the world, on account of what they performed therein.
