1. Full Dutch translation of Tabari's text

   ( فَيَوْمَئِذٍ وَقَعَتِ الْوَاقِعَةُ ) ("then on that Day the Event befalls"). He, exalted is His praise, says: on that Day the Cry occurs, the Hour, and the Resurrection breaks forth.

   Explanation of the word of the Exalted: وَانْشَقَّتِ السَّمَاءُ فَهِيَ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَاهِيَةٌ ("and the heaven splits open, for on that Day it is frail") (69:16).

   He, exalted is His mention, says: and the heaven bursts open, ( فَهِيَ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَاهِيَةٌ ), He says: split and torn apart.

   And similar to what we have said concerning this, the exegetes have stated.

   * Mention of who said that:

   Mūsā ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Masrūqī related to me, saying: Abū Usāma related to us, on the authority of al-Ajlaḥ, who said: I heard al-Ḍaḥḥāk ibn Muzāḥim say: "When the Day of Resurrection arrives, Allah commands the lowest heaven along with its inhabitants, and the angels who are in it descend, and they encircle the earth and whoever is upon it; then the second, then the third, then the fourth, then the fifth, then the sixth, then the seventh; and they arrange themselves rank after rank. Then the highest Angel descends, with hell (jahannam) on his left side. When the inhabitants of the earth see it, they flee in panic, but they do not reach any region of the earth without finding there seven ranks of angels, so that they return to the place where they were. That is the word of Allah: إِنِّي أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ يَوْمَ التَّنَادِ * يَوْمَ تُوَلُّونَ مُدْبِرِينَ مَا لَكُمْ مِنَ اللَّهِ مِنْ عَاصِمٍ ('Indeed, I fear for you the Day of Calling out, the Day on which you will turn away in flight; there is for you against Allah no protector') (40:32-33). And that is His word: وَجَاءَ رَبُّكَ وَالْمَلَكُ صَفًّا صَفًّا * وَجِيءَ يَوْمَئِذٍ بِجَهَنَّمَ ('And your Lord comes, with the angels, rank after rank, and on that Day hell is brought forth') (89:22-23). And His word: يَا مَعْشَرَ الْجِنِّ وَالإِنْسِ إِنِ اسْتَطَعْتُمْ أَنْ تَنْفُذُوا مِنْ أَقْطَارِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأَرْضِ فَانْفُذُوا لا تَنْفُذُونَ إِلا بِسُلْطَانٍ ('O company of jinn and humankind, if you are able to pass through the regions of the heavens and the earth, then pass through! You will not pass through except with an authority') (55:33). And that is His word: ( وَانْشَقَّتِ السَّمَاءُ فَهِيَ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَاهِيَةٌ * وَالْمَلَكُ عَلَى أَرْجَائِهَا ) ('and the heaven splits open, for on that Day it is frail, and the angels are at its edges') (69:16-17)."

   ( فَيَوْمَئِذٍ وَقَعَتِ الْوَاقِعَةُ ) يقول جلّ ثناؤه: فيومئذ وقعت الصيحة الساعة، وقامت القيامة. القول في تأويل قوله تعالى : وَانْشَقَّتِ السَّمَاءُ فَهِيَ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَاهِيَةٌ (16) يقول تعالى ذكره: وانصدعت السماء ( فَهِيَ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَاهِيَةٌ ) يقول: منشقة متصدّعة. وبنحو الذي قلنا في ذلك قال أهل التأويل. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثني موسى بن عبد الرحمن المسروقيّ، قال: ثنا أبو أسامة، عن الأجلح، قال: سمعت الضحاك بن مزاحم، قال: " إذا كان يوم القيامة أمر الله السماء الدنيا بأهلها، ونـزل من فيها من الملائكة، فأحاطوا بالأرض ومن عليها، ثم الثانية، ثم الثالثة، ثم الرابعة، ثم الخامسة، ثم السادسة، ثم السابعة، فصفوا صفا دون صفّ، ثم نـزل الملك الأعلى على مجنبته اليسرى جهنم، فإذا رآها أهل الأرض ندّوا، فلا يأتون قطرا من أقطار الأرض إلا وجدوا سبعة صفوف من الملائكة، فيرجعون إلى المكان الذي كانوا فيه، فذلك قوله الله: إِنِّي أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ يَوْمَ التَّنَادِ * يَوْمَ تُوَلُّونَ مُدْبِرِينَ مَا لَكُمْ مِنَ اللَّهِ مِنْ عَاصِمٍ ، وذلك قوله: وَجَاءَ رَبُّكَ وَالْمَلَكُ صَفًّا صَفًّا * وَجِيءَ يَوْمَئِذٍ بِجَهَنَّمَ ، وقوله: يَا مَعْشَرَ الْجِنِّ وَالإِنْسِ إِنِ اسْتَطَعْتُمْ أَنْ تَنْفُذُوا مِنْ أَقْطَارِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأَرْضِ فَانْفُذُوا لا تَنْفُذُونَ إِلا بِسُلْطَانٍ ، وذلك قوله: ( وَانْشَقَّتِ السَّمَاءُ فَهِيَ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَاهِيَةٌ * وَالْمَلَكُ عَلَى أَرْجَائِهَا ) .
