Ibn Zayd used to say concerning this what Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said, concerning His word: ( وَحُمِلَتِ الأرْضُ وَالْجِبَالُ فَدُكَّتَا دَكَّةً وَاحِدَةً ) ("and the earth and the mountains are lifted up and crushed with a single crushing"). He said: they are turned to dust. And it is said: ( فَدُكَّتَا ) ("they both are crushed") — although before this the mountains and the earth were mentioned, and that is a plural — and He did not say "fadukikna" (they all are crushed), because He regarded the mountains as a single thing, as the poet said:
They both are two lords, so they claim, but in reality they make us a lord only if the sheep of them both prosper.
And as it is said: أَنَّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأَرْضَ كَانَتَا رَتْقًا ("that the heavens and the earth were a single joined-together whole") (21:30).
