Tafseer of The Sovereignty · Al-Mulk · 67:11

فَٱعْتَرَفُوا۟ بِذَنۢبِهِمْ فَسُحْقًۭا لِّأَصْحَٰبِ ٱلسَّعِيرِ

And they will admit their sin, so [it is] alienation for the companions of the Blaze.

    And His word: ( فَاعْتَرَفُوا بِذَنْبِهِمْ — "then they will confess their sin"). He says: then they will acknowledge their sin. He used the singular "sin" (al-dhanb), while it is attached to a plural, because there is a verbal meaning in it, so that the singular fulfills the function of the plural, as one says: kharaja ʿaṭāʾ al-nās ("the gift of the people came out") and aʿṭiyat al-nās ("the gifts of the people") ( فَسُحْقًا لأصْحَابِ السَّعِيرِ — "away then with the inhabitants of the Blaze"). He says: removal, then, for the people of the Fire.

    In line with what we have said about that, the people of interpretation have spoken.

    ʿAlī related to me, saying: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His word: ( فَسُحْقًا لأصْحَابِ السَّعِيرِ — "away then with the inhabitants of the Blaze"), he says: removal.

    Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of Salama ibn Kuhayl, on the authority of Saʿīd ibn Jubayr ( فَسُحْقًا لأصْحَابِ السَّعِيرِ — "away then with the inhabitants of the Blaze"), he said: he said: suḥq is a valley in hell (jahannam). The reciters pronounce the ḥāʾ of al-suḥq lightly (without a vowel), and that, according to us, is the correct one, because that is the most eloquent of the language of the Arabs. And among the Arabs there are those who move it with a ḍamma.

    وقوله: (فَاعْتَرَفُوا بِذَنْبِهِمْ ) يقول: فأقرّوا بذنبهم ووحَّد الذنب، وقد أضيف إلى الجمع لأن فيه معنى فعل، فأدى الواحد عن الجمع، كما يقال: خرج عطاء الناس، وأعطية الناس (فَسُحْقًا لأصْحَابِ السَّعِيرِ ) يقول: فبُعدا لأهل النار. وبنحو الذي قلنا في ذلك قال أهل التأويل. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثني عليّ، قال ثنا أبو صالح، قال: ثني معاوية، عن عليّ، عن ابن عباس، قوله: (فَسُحْقًا لأصْحَابِ السَّعِيرِ ) يقول: بُعدا. حدثنا ابن حميد، قال: ثنا مهران، عن سفيان، عن سلمة بن كهيل، عن سعيد بن جبير (فَسُحْقًا لأصْحَابِ السَّعِيرِ ) قال: قال سُحقا واد في جهنم، والقرّاء على تخفيف الحاء من السُّحْق، وهو الصواب عندنا لأن الفصيح من كلام العرب ذلك، ومن العرب من يحرّكها بالضمّ.
