The statement concerning the interpretation of His word, the Exalted: وَقَالُوا لَوْ كُنَّا نَسْمَعُ أَوْ نَعْقِلُ مَا كُنَّا فِي أَصْحَابِ السَّعِيرِ (10) فَاعْتَرَفُوا بِذَنْبِهِمْ فَسُحْقًا لأَصْحَابِ السَّعِيرِ (11) ("And they will say: 'Had we but listened or reflected, we would not have been among the inhabitants of the Blazing Flame' (10). Thus they confessed their sin; so away with the inhabitants of the Blazing Flame (11)").
The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: and the company who were cast into the Fire said to the keepers: لَوْ كُنَّا ("Had we but") — in the worldly life — نَسْمَعُ أَوْ نَعْقِلُ ("listened or reflected") — to the warners, to the good counsel which they brought us, or had we but understood from them that to which they were calling us — مَا كُنَّا ("we would not have been") — today — فِي أَصْحَابِ السَّعِيرِ ("among the inhabitants of the Blazing Flame"), by which are meant: the people of the Fire.
