Tafseer of The Hypocrites · Al-Munaafiqoon · 63:7
They are the ones who say, "Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah until they disband." And to Allah belongs the depositories of the heavens and the earth, but the hypocrites do not understand.
Important: The Arabic source text is always authoritative. This translation is a study aid and has not been verified by scholars — do not use it as a basis for religious proof or for deriving rulings (ahkam). When in doubt, always consult the Arabic text and a qualified scholar.
The Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says: هُمُ الَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ ("They are the ones who say") — He means the hypocrites who say to their companions: لا تُنْفِقُوا عَلَى مَنْ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ("Spend nothing on those who are with the Messenger of Allah") of his companions, the emigrants (muhājirūn), حَتَّى يَنْفَضُّوا ("until they disperse") says: until they separate from him.
And His word: وَلِلَّهِ خَزَائِنُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأرْضِ ("And to Allah belong the treasuries of the heavens and the earth") says: and to Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and on the earth, and in His hand are the keys of the treasuries thereof; no one can give anyone anything except by His will. وَلَكِنَّ الْمُنَافِقِينَ لا يَفْقَهُونَ ("But the hypocrites do not understand") — that it is so; and therefore they say: spend nothing on those who are with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, until they disperse.
In accordance with what we have said about this, the scholars of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) also spoke.
* Mention of who said that:
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, he said: my father related to me, he said: my uncle related to me, he said: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His word: هُمُ الَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ لا تُنْفِقُوا عَلَى مَنْ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ حَتَّى يَنْفَضُّوا ("They are the ones who say: spend nothing on those who are with the Messenger of Allah, until they disperse"), he said: do not feed Muḥammad and his companions, until hunger afflicts them and they abandon their Prophet.
Bishr related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: هُمُ الَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ لا تُنْفِقُوا عَلَى مَنْ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ حَتَّى يَنْفَضُّوا ("They are the ones who say: spend nothing on those who are with the Messenger of Allah, until they disperse") — he recited it to the end of the verse — and this is the saying of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ubayy to his hypocrite companions: spend nothing on Muḥammad and his companions, until they abandon him; for if you were not to spend on them, they would abandon him and withdraw from him.
Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, he said: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda: هُمُ الَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ لا تُنْفِقُوا عَلَى مَنْ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ حَتَّى يَنْفَضُّوا ("They are the ones who say: spend nothing on those who are with the Messenger of Allah, until they disperse") — indeed, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ubayy ibn Salūl said to his companions: spend nothing on those who are with the Messenger of Allah, for if you were not to spend on them, they would already disperse.
It was related to me on the authority of al-Ḥusayn, he said: I heard Abū Muʿādh say: ʿUbayd related to us, he said: I heard al-Ḍaḥḥāk say concerning His word: لا تُنْفِقُوا عَلَى مَنْ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ حَتَّى يَنْفَضُّوا ("Spend nothing on those who are with the Messenger of Allah, until they disperse"), he means the assistance and the help, and not the obligatory alms (zakāh); and those who said this were the hypocrites.
Al-Rabīʿ ibn Sulaymān related to us, he said: Asad ibn Mūsā related to us, he said: Yaḥyā ibn Abī Zāʾida related to us, he said: al-Aʿmash related to us, on the authority of ʿAmr ibn Murra, on the authority of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā, on the authority of Zayd ibn Arqam, he said: "When Ibn Ubayy said what he said, I informed the Prophet ﷺ of it; then he came and swore an oath. The people began to say to me: are you bringing the Messenger of Allah ﷺ a lie? Until I remained sitting at home out of fear that, when they saw me, they would say: this is the one who lies; until it was revealed: هُمُ الَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ ("They are the ones who say")."
