It is all the same for them whether you ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them; never will Allah forgive them. Indeed, Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.

The Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says to His Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ: it is the same, O Muḥammad, for these hypocrites to whom it was said "come, that the Messenger of Allah may ask forgiveness for you" — (whether you ask forgiveness for them) for their sins (or do not ask forgiveness for them, Allah will not forgive them) He says: Allah will not absolve them of their sins, but He will punish them for them. (Verily, Allah does not guide the corrupt people) He says: verily, Allah does not grant success in faith to the people who lie about Him, who disbelieve in Him, and who withdraw themselves from His obedience (al-fāsiqīn — the corrupt ones).
And Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: my father related to me, saying: my uncle related to me, saying: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His words: (It is the same for them whether you ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them, Allah will not forgive them) he said: This verse was revealed after the verse in Surah At-Tawbah: Whether you ask forgiveness for them seventy times, Allah will still not forgive them [At-Tawbah: 80]. Thereupon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "I will add more than seventy times to it." Then Allah revealed: (It is the same for them whether you ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them, Allah will not forgive them).
